The Piraeus Society Today

According to its Constitution, the aims and objectives of the Piraeus Society are:

 

1. To offer cultural guidance and promote the intellectual development of its members and of the community.

2. To encourage and achieve the development of mutual support among members of the community.

3. To foster the education and moral development of young people andto help improve their level of physical fitness and sporting performance.

 

 

DEPARTMENTS CURRENTLY OPERATED BY THE PIRAEUS SOCIETY

 

   

A) An Educational Department, which includes the following Schools: The Conservatory of Piraeus, the Senior Dramatic Arts School, the Dance School, the Art School, the Photography School, the Computer School, the Traditional Dance School and the Parents’ School.

 

B) A Sports Section. The Section includes the Physical Education Department of the Piraeus Society, which consists of the following branches: Track and Field Sports, Basketball and Volleyball. The Section is aiming to include other sports in its activities in the future, depending on circumstances.

 

 

 

 

ACTIVITIES SCHEDULED BY THE PIRAEUS SOCIETY

 

 

PIRAEUSSOCIETY EVENTS

 

 

  1. Bands of folk musicians from abroad are regularly invited in order to bring people of different nations together via cultural exchange.
  2. The Events Hall (Baron Kimon Rallis Hall) is used for the presentation of works by different authors.
  3. The Society maintains contacts with Greek communities in other countries in order to foster the development of cultural ties and nurture the Christian traditions of Greece. 

 

 

THE SPORTS SECTION ORGANISES: Games and tournaments for teams from all over Greece.

 

 

THE DEPARTMENT OF EVENING EDUCATION SCHOOLS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN EMPLOYMENT ORGANISES:

  1. A highly prestigious annual Photography Exhibition.
  2. An annual exhibition of paintings by renowned artists.
  3. An annual exhibition of paintings by young artists.
  4. An annual exhibition of photographs and paintings by Evening School Students.
  5. Educational excursions and competitions.
  6. Painting and photography competitions for younger children.

 

 

THE ART DEPARTMENT ORGANISES:

  1. An annual concert featuring teachers and high achieving students.
  2. Regularly scheduled concerts featuring younger students.
  3. Music seminars and similar events concerning issues related to art. These are presented by academics from music universities and academies abroad.
  4. Theatrical events performed by students and graduates of the Senior Dramatic Arts School of the Piraeus Society.
  5. Theatre, cinema and television seminars presented by teachers of high standing within their field.
  6. Dance performances and demonstrations presented by the Dance Department.
  7. Major concerts featuring artist from abroad.

 

 

THE LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE DEPARTMENT ORGANISES:

  1. Regular lectures by academics, educationalists, writers and scientists.
  2. The biennial “Pan-Hellenic Literary Contest”, which attracts contestants not just from Greece but also from abroad.
  3. The Department also publishes a quarterly periodical, the “Peraika Grammata” (Piraeus Letters).

 

 

THE KOSMITEIA (DEANERY) AND SOCIAL EVENTS DEPARTMENT ORGANISES:

  1. Dinners and dances which are held in the Society’s Event Hall (Baron Kimon Rallis Hall).
  2. Excursions organised not just to strengthen relations among members but also to familiarise members with archaeological sites and other important places.

 

 

THE DEPARTMENT OF PIRAEUS STUDIES:

  1. Publishes articles by members, friends of the Society, etc.
  2. Invites members to submit research concerning the Piraeus area and its history.
